In an attempt to make an unauthorized version of Bram Stoker's Dracula,
German director F.W. Murnau changed the name and details of the villain.
But Stoker's estate took them to court, and complete destruction of every
copy was ordered and carried out ... but not quite.
Many years later, one copy resurfaced, having survived in Germany, out
of reach of the English law. This has now been digitalised, and retains
most of the original.
Stoker had recognised the possibility of an erotic connection between
the vampire and his prey; this movie uses that beautifully, allowing the
heroine to rise to the occasion during the final reel.
There's no doubt ... this is a great movie.
