This movie is a classic Teen 'B' Movie. Played strictly for laughs, it has
all you'd expect - ageing actors on the slide hoping to kick-start their careers
and maybe gain Teen respect (as if!) - step forward Donald Sutherland. Some
of the supporting actors really cannot act out of a paper bag, and the vampires
seem to have little 'motivation'. A good fun movie, worth a few dollars
for the laughs, probably better with a drink or two. But the script was
Joss Whedon's; this really was was the Birth of Buffy - and that makes it essential
viewing for any serious fan, not to mention students of the vampyreverse. There
are, of course, similarities with the TV series, and there are significant differences.
Whedon certainly learned from his mistakes - and, of course, had little control
over how his story was interpreted - and the final form of the Buffyverse is much
more sophisticated than the original. Well worth a budget price. If not
full price. - Starring: Kristy Swanson, Donald Sutherland
