Buffy the Vampire Slayer, set to be retired after seven seasons, has
been a remarkable television achievement - sold in many countries around
the world, the show was not a major peak hour success - but its influence
has been huge, and recognition of its star - and its subject - has been
phenomenal.
The show has tackled - fearlessly - not just vampires and demons, but
also many almost taboo areas of teen life and growing up; death of a parent,
witchcraft, sex and betrayal - not to mention angst - have been tackled
and talked about the world over.
The overall quality of ideas, scripts and acting has been consistently
high, and the team have also managed to retain that key element of humor,
without ever undermining more serious points being made.
The convenience of having a door to hell beneath your local feet has
allowed the series to experiment with all manner of demons, but, interestingly,
only two methods of control have been explored in any depth (though many
are alluded to or experimented with).
The two are Spike's chip, and the good old fashioned wooden stake. Computers,
witchcraft and the Power of Love all get a look in - but not in the sense
of building an armory of weapons that we - and future slayers - can share.
